Pilot Boat is a Palmer’s pub and was taken over by a very ambitious managerial family in 2018. This was the first place I worked when I moved over to the UK, and I absolutely loved it.
The pub is nestled in the little village of Lyme Regis which holds a great deal of history, both culturally and archaeologically (the Jurassic coast runs through this town bringing beauty and curiosities to anyone who visits). It is almost directly opposite the beach and is in the village centre, super close to most shops and amenities.
I knew little about the history of the pub but the renovation/ refurb welcomed a very fresh and modern take, really lovely interior. The food! Let me tell you, the chefs were incredible (and very easy to work with! For those in the hospitality industry we both know what a blessing this is for chefs and hostesses alike) and the quality and taste was always superb. They offered menus for the restaurant or the bistro/ terrace.
The pub also has three BEAUTIFUL rooms to offer that match the modern and fresh interior throughout.
Now, as an Australian, I love seafood (not encouraging any stereotypes but I bloody love a BBQ’d prawn!!) and the freshness and range offered was fantastic.
I would almost always go in on my day off and order the whole crab, with a cocktail of course.
At this point in time, I was still fairly new to Ales and Beers that I really liked, but the selection was good with most ales being Palmers and a decent selection of draught. Nowadays I am a beer girl but I am always partial to a cocktail or GnT, and the cocktail list is strong enough to put a smile on your face!
A little tangent that always takes me back to this place:
One night, a colleague came home with a live lobster at 3am after spending the evening at a few pubs. My friend and I were up having a drink and a chat after the night shift and we were interested in how he came into possession of the crustacean at such a time. Shortly after, he cooked it beautifully with butter and parsley, ate the meat in the claws and went to bed. Needless to say, I absolutely devoured the rest as my vegetarian friend watched in horror. Seafood aplenty.
I would definitely say, if you have time, or are nearby, please go in, it is a lovely pub and the people are always very welcoming.
I loved Lyme Regis and Dorset so much I have an article about it in Travelling for Food.
